Nature has a plethora of ways to heal the body. And the most abundant, and accessible, source of natural healing and wellness is readily available on a daily basis.

Water, or hydrotherapy, has been used throughout time to heal all types of illness.

Hydrotherapy treatments, including colon hydrotherapy, can be used for pain relief, physical therapy and long-term disease.

Here are three types you should check out:

Colon hydrotherapy

Fecal waste can build up in the colon, creating toxins and promoting the growth of bad bacteria.

But colonics, also known as colonic irrigation, cleanses toxins from the digestive system, riding the body of disease-causing bacteria and allowing nutrients to absorb more easily into the body.

It involves instilling sterile, warm water into the rectum and through the intestine. That helps get rid of waste and promotes the natural peristalsis of the body.

Many researchers are now saying that a healthy digestive tract and gut is the key to a healthy body.

The microbiome, the community of bacteria that live within us, is important in our everyday health and wellness.

And regular colonic irrigation treatment can improve the overall health of the gastrointestinal tract.

Hydro-massage

There’s nothing quite like warm water and a massage.

This method utilizes both.

The combination of warm water and massage techniques are used to relax muscles, increase blood circulation and relieve muscular pain and tension.

There are many different methods — thermal, mechanical or chemical — but the benefits are numerous.

After a hydro-massage, you may feel extra body awareness, reduced anxiety and overall well-being.

Kneipp System

Developed by and named after Sebastian Kneipp, this is a comprehensive healing treatment that treats physical, mental and spiritual wellness.

There are five doctrines to the system, but one of the biggest is hydrotherapy.

Kneipp made use of warm and cold water applied to the skin.

There are over 100 different types of water treatment that he developed, including wraps, affusions, baths and even snow walking.

The human microbiome is a relatively new discovery, especially to the research realm, but it holds promise for a healthy human future.

When we talk about the microbiome, we’re talking about the ecological community of microorganisms that quite literally share our body space. In fact, there are around 10 times more microbial cells than human cells in the body, which means that in some ways the microorganisms that reside in our bodies make up a lot of who we are. And many are starting to consider this an organ.

The microbes in our bodies may have a very large effect on auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, rheumatoid arthritis and possibly some cancers. This organ may also modify the brain.

The large majority of these microbes are non-toxic, existing in harmony with the body and aiding in our overall wellness.

But can microbes really impact your health? And can feeding these microbes a healthy diet by eating various foods boost your microbiome’s health and, consequentially, your own?

Too soon to tell

Research on the microbiome is still in its early stages. So it’s hard to say whether eating certain foods can promote a healthy microbiome.

Yet, there are still some foods, like organic foods and vegetables that are showing promise.

Feeding your microbiome

Dietary fiber is basically food for the bacteria that live your gut, research Jeff Leach told NPR. And keeping those bacteria nourished allows them to give off good nutrients that nourish our guts. Garlic and leek, for example, are two great vegetables that contain beneficial fiber. In addition, garlic may help kill off the bad bacteria in our gut, allowing the good bacteria to flourish. Fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut could give the good bacteria a boost as well.

The jury is still out on the effectiveness of ingesting certain foods to help the microbiome.

But a healthy diet in general has certainly been proven good for the body. And regardless of what it does to the microbes in our body, it’s important to eat well for overall health.

Check out our organic food diet guide for more information on eating organic.

One of the main ingredients in overall health and wellness is maintaining a healthy colon (large intestine). As the last part of your digestive system, it extracts water and salt from solid wastes before they are eliminated from the body. It’s a big job, and one that comes with a lot of risks.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diverticulosis and colon cancer are all illnesses of an unhealthy colon.

Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do on a daily or weekly basis to help prevent those illnesses.

These detox tips can also help prevent bloating, constipation, diarrhea and gas.

Colon Cleanse

Colon hydrotherapy, or colon cleansing, is a natural way to eliminate built-up waste material. That waste can cause toxins to seep through the lining of the large intestine into the blood stream, causing health risks.

This method employs a gentle, warm and sterile flow of water gently instilled into the large intestine. It not only clears waste material, but it activities the body’s natural peristalsis to move the waste out more efficiently.

Get in touch with your local colonic irrigation practitioner before attempting this treatment.

Exercise

We all know that exercise is large part of maintain a healthy colon and a healthy body overall. But why? When you exercise — walk, run, kayak, hike or bike (anything will do) — you increase the blood flow and circulation throughout your body. That gets more oxygen to every organ, including your large intestine. And that can help prevent colon cancer and other major diseases.

Keep in mind that as long as you stick to a fitness regime, it doesn’t have to be excessive. We’re not trying to be pro-athletes. As little as 30 minutes of walking, yoga or another exercise you enjoy can help a tremendous amount.

The latest research says that splitting up exercise throughout the day can give your body a major boost. For example, try walking for 10 minutes during break periods spread every couple of hours throughout the day.

Fiber

Fiber, of course, is a must for colon health. Consuming high-fiber foods on a daily basis helps to move waste through the digestive tract and out of the body.

Fiber-rich organic foods include brown rice, bananas, broccoli, beans and even raspberries.

Just remember to start by slowly adding fiber to your diet, building the amount your consuming over weeks of time.

Water

Last, but certainly not least, is drinking plenty of water. Hydration is crucial for the proper function of the colon. Without it, the colon doesn’t have the essential ingredient to rid the body of all of its toxins.

Water needs vary by individual, depending on your activity level and your overall health. The Institute for Medicine recently found that the average for men is roughly 13 cups per day, while the average for women is around 9 cups. But it’s important to remember that too much water can cause hyponatremia, a fatal disturbance in brain function.

Want to take care of your brain without a detox program? Log some more hours of shut eye.

There’s a new study published in Science Magazine which found that the cleanup system in the brain, the one that flushes out toxins and waste the cells produce on a daily basis, jumps into double time during sleep in mice.

Today, about 20% of Americans say that only get about 6 hours of sleep per night, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

That’s simply not enough for most people, and the number of people claiming sleep deprivation is increasing.

That means that a large part of the American population is at risk for some serious illness.

“Sleep puts the brain in another state where we clean out all the byproducts of activity during the daytime,” said study author and University of Rochester neurosurgeon Maiken Nedergaard.

So staying up at night could potential cause those toxins to build up in the brain.

And that can have disastrous consequences — mental fog, migraines and even seizures.

In fact, rates that were deprived of sleep completely died within weeks.

When we sleep, our brains shrink and allow fluid to enter and flush out the toxins, noted Nedergaard.

If we’re not sleeping, our brains aren’t getting the maintenance they need to function well on a daily basis.

Other roles of sleep

The function of sleep has long been a mystery, but there are a few things that have been mostly confirmed.

In addition to helping detox the brain, sleep also plays a key role in memory formation.

Sleeping shifts short term memories from the day into long-term memories.

If you don’t get enough sleep, you’re at a higher risk for memory loss and diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Additional detox programs

If you’re not getting enough sleep, like many Americans, it’s important to detox your body.

One way to do that is through a detox diet.

Switching to an organic food diet can slowly rid the body of many toxins while populating the body with nutrients.

Traditional massage has long been a form of stress relief. And there’s no doubt that it helps numerous individuals recover from tense life events.

But traditional massage is different than lymphatic massage in some important ways.

While traditional massage focuses on manipulating the superficial and deep layers of muscle tissue to enhance function, lymph massage uses repetitive, gentle and rhythmic touch to increase circulation of the lymphatic fluid.

Of course, both types can relieve stress.

But if you’re looking to give your lymphatic system a boost in addition to killing stress, then lymph drainage is the type of massage that will suit you best.

The effects of stress

We know that a little stress can be good, keeping us on our toes.

However, a lot of stress can trigger a downward spiral of ill health, depression and emotional exhaustion.

When we experience stress, the sympathetic nervous system activates, causing a fight-or-flight response.

All kinds of hormones and neurochemicals are released during a stressful event, having profound effects on the body and mind.

In fact, cortisol — one of the chemicals released — can weaken the immune system.

And chronic stress can cause all kinds of illness, including asthma, fatigue, headaches, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

Needless to say, stress relief is a must in this life.

Is lymphatic massage the answer?

It can certainly help.

The massage technique has been shown to help with a variety of illnesses, including stress.

Lymph massage encourages the proper function of the lymphatic system, the transportation highway of the immune system.

And when your immune system is in tip-top shape, your resistance to disease is increased and your stress levels are low.

You’ve probably heard that lymphatic massage can relieve stress, aches and pains, and even help a bit with weight loss. But it can also help with more serious conditions like lymphedema.

For those who aren’t already aware, lymphedema is the obstruction of fluid (lymph) in the lymphatic system. Many treatments have been developed to fight this condition – that includes compression stockings and surgery. These treatments can be expensive, inconvenient, and painful.

But people like Robert Harris, director and senior Instructor at the Dr. Vodder School, believe there’s another way to address this condition.

In one of his journal papers, Harris says that lymphatic drainage massage is an effective way to clear accumulated fluid when the lymph system has failed.

This particular paper outlines three case studies examining the success of the detox massage procedure on patients with both primary and secondary lymphedema.

Three different non-invasive measuring tools were used to measure lymph flow in patients after a 45 minute standard lymphatic massage.

Harris’ findings indicate that there’s clearly something to be said about this easy and absolutely pain-free procedure.

The patients all improved.

Repeated massage sessions could drastically improve the condition in patients, increasing lymph flow and helping lymphedema.

At Transformational Health, our clients are certainly evidence of continued health and wellness after numerous lymphatic massage sessions.

Colon hydrotherapy has been shown, time and time again, to promote a healthier lifestyle and a better overall well-being for its users.

In fact, a 2008 study done at the Department of Colorectal Surgery, University Hospital Maastricht in The Netherlands, examined the success of colonic irrigation for defecation disorders, when standard treatments and surgery have failed.

In the study, patients were divided into three groups: those with constipation (Group A), fecal incontinence (Group B), or both (Group C). The Biotrol Irrimatic pump was used for the colonic sessions.

Apart from the study itself, patients completed a questionnaire at the time of the procedure and again after 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months.

The study overwhelming improved the disorders of patients, with all patients in Group A seeing an improvement in incontinence. In group B, 30 percent of patients reported an improvement in their bowel activity. And in group C, 60 percent of patients became pseudo-continent for feces, and 3 of 10 reported improvement in constipation.

All in all, the group of physicians involved in the study at the hospital concluded that colonic irrigation is an effective alternative treatment for defecation disorders.

Lymphatic massage uses less than one ounce per square centimeter of pressure on the body at any given time to effectively improve a number of functions in the body and active the flow of lymph — it’s that powerful.

That’s because this type of massage focus on the often-overlooked lymphatic system.

Lymph is a whitish liquid which flows throughout the body via the lymph vessels. Its main job is to collect toxins. And at certain sections in the body referred to as “lymph nodes,” lymph is cleaned, ridding the body of those toxins.

Lymph drainage massage helps this process, and the benefits are numerous.

Relief from post-surgery pains

Lymphatic massage can actually alleviate pain after surgery.

According to Stephen M. Krant, MD, lymphatic massage reduces swelling and aids in quick post-operation recovery for plastic surgery patients.

“In my practice, as a cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, I often encounter post-operative swelling and, in some cases, occurrences of lymphedema in my breast reconstruction patients,” said Krant in an article he wrote for La Jolla Light.

Lymphatic massage can help alleviate those lymphedema symptoms, he notes.

Krant, like so many other skilled physicians, strongly believes in the power of lymphatic massage. And he regularly uses it maximize recovery and aesthetic results in all his patients.

Treating cellulite

There’s a study by Terrance Ryan, MD, a professor of dermatology at Oxford University which shows the speed in which lymph and blood flow through fat tissue is related to the creation of fat. Slow circulation causes the creation of fat, and fast circulation promotes the release of fat.

Lymphatic drainage releases collagen that traps the lymph vessels, therefore getting rid of cellulite.

Before undergoing any health-based treatment or procedure, like colon hydrotherapy, it’s important to prepare. It’s the best way to ensure a beneficial outcome.

Taking preparation advice from your physician, dentist, chiropractor, or alternative wellness practitioner can go a long way.

And just like any other health-promoting procedure, getting colonic irrigation requires some DIY prep-work. The things we’ll recommend to you aren’t exhaustive, so before you undergo this detoxification process, it’s important to ask your colonic technician what other techniques you can employ in order to get the most from the session.

Here are a couple of prep steps:

Do Your Research

Read up on exactly what the session will involve. After a colonic irrigation, you’ll likely feel completely revitalized. But it’s important to keep your body in tip-top shape before and after.

Give your body a boost

Before undergoing colonics, it’s important to be in good spirits. And keep in mind that colonics work best (whether it is in regard to weight loss, constipation, arthritis, etc) if you combine it with regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular checkups with your doctor.

Simply put, there’s no question that the procedure works, but you you’ll get the most out of it when you make it part of an arsenal and not the sole cure.

Hydrate

Although you’ll feel very refreshed after the procedure, you may also be a bit dehydrated.

According to Dr. Michael F. Picco, M.D., colon cleansing may lead to an increased risk of dehydration. Yes, unfortunately, it’s true. Apart from its amazing ability to flush out the digestive tract and leave patients feeling incredibly refreshed, along with flushing out bad bacteria, the procedure also ends up taking some water from your system.

All in all, it’s highly suggested that you frequently drink water in the days leading up to the session and post colonics.
