The Benefits of Vitamin D on the Immune SystemAuthor: Jessica

Through the constant parade of vitamins and minerals marketed to us every day, choosing the ones that really matter can be kind of like picking a needle out of haystack. So instead of taking daily supplements, we hope that our healthy diets will take care of our immune system. While a healthy diet is extremely beneficial to our bodies, vitamin D supplements may offer an extra boost of protection against disease. An increasing amount of the population is being diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency. But simply taking a supplement and getting a bit more sun exposure may be the answer to better health. Where it’s found Vitamin D is naturally synthesized in the body when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Most experts say that 10 – 20 minutes of sunlight exposure a day is enough to prevent vitamin D deficiency. It’s also found in fish, eggs, cod liver oil and fortified milk. There are two kinds of the vitamin that are important in humans. Vitamin D2 is synthesized by plants and vitamin D3 is synthesized by humans when exposed to ultraviolet-B rays. How it helps the body Vitamin D is mostly used to aid in the absorption of calcium within the body to maintain strong bones and maintain normal levels of phosphorus. However, research has recently implicated that the vitamin may also provide protection against autoimmune diseases, cancer and hypertension. According to the Mayo Clinic, Vitamin D may help regulate cellular growth and possibly prevent cells from turning cancerous. Taking a supplement may also help with autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. In one study, women who took at least 400 IU of vitamin D per day were 40 percent less likely to develop MS. In one study at Creighton University, researchers discovered a 60 to 77 percent decrease in cancer rates among postmenopausal women, and a study at the University of California-San Diego found that a daily intake of 2,000 IU of Vitamin D and 10 to 15 minutes in sunlight reduced the chance of colorectal cancer by nearly 66 percent. Supplements along with colon hydrotherapy Getting an ample amount of vitamin D along with other therapies – like colon hydrotherapy – can really create major health benefits. The colon plays a major part in the health of the body. Old bacteria that build up inside the colon can be absorbed through the walls of the colon and cause toxicity and infection. Cleansing the colon regularly along with at least 10 – 20 minutes of sun exposure a day may prevent many illnesses. If you’re looking for colonics in Santa Monica or colonics in Palos Verdes, our expert colon hydrotherapists can put together a personalized detox program for you.
